Why Haven't I Heard of the Coronavirus Until Recently? Unveiling the Truth

The past year has seen an unprecedented global health crisis. Countless individuals and families have been impacted by the coronavirus (Covid-19). Yet, some might wonder, if the virus is such a significant threat, why have I not heard of it until recently?

The Impact of the Coronavirus on Seniors

As a senior citizen, I have tragically experienced the devastating effects of the virus on my close circle. Over the past year, I lost nearly 10 friends who directly succumbed to the disease. The emails I received about their passing were devastating, detailing how they fought for weeks on ventilators, often alone, before ultimately passing away.

The senior population, while comprising a smaller percentage of the overall population, has been disproportionately affected by the illness. According to official statistics, seniors are the largest group of individuals who have died from the coronavirus. Given this, it is crucial to acknowledge and address the significant impact of the virus on our older generations.

The Impact on Personal Social Life

My social life and personal interactions have drastically changed. For instance, a family gathering at our favorite Mexican restaurant was considered normal last fall. However, due to strict social distancing measures and limited seating options, the place was virtually empty. The only other diners were a short distance away, adding to the eerie silence and loneliness I felt that day.

The effect on personal relationships is also profound. I lost a cherished friend with Parkinson's disease, who relied on CBD oil and homemade cookies to manage her tremors and pain. Our monthly gatherings in a Pot Luck social group brought us close, and the absence of her presence has left a lasting void. Furthermore, attending the funeral of her friend was not possible, which was a profoundly sad occasion for all involved.

Living with Long-COVID and the Broader Impact

For many, the impact of the virus goes beyond just the initial infection. Long-COVID, a condition that can develop after an initial infection, has affected a significant number of people. About a half-dozen of my friends are currently in the grip of this long-term illness, and their condition is far from positive. My wife's recent haircut experience highlighted the harsh reality of the pandemic. When the stylist mentioned a woman who had lost her mother, sister, and daughter in just six months due to the virus, it brought home the severity of the situation.

These personal stories are just the tip of the iceberg. The statistics show that approximately one death is recorded for every 60 US citizens, with many more facing long-term recovery challenges. It is evident that the virus's impact is widespread, affecting individuals, families, and communities worldwide.

The Call to Awareness and Action

If you find yourself questioning the impact of the coronavirus, it is essential to change your news sources or gather information from reliable channels. The virus is no hoax; it is a real and ongoing threat to public health. We must remain vigilant and informed to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

In conclusion, the coronavirus is not just a distant threat; it is a reality that touches lives in profound and often unexpected ways. By sharing and acknowledging these personal stories, we can raise awareness and emphasize the importance of staying informed and proactive in these challenging times.
