Some proponents of creationism argue that it is a scientific theory. While it is true that any scientific theory must be falsifiable, creationism, as it is often understood, fails to meet this criterion. The term 'falsified' does not automatically render a theory unscientific; rather, it suggests that the theory has been tested and found wanting. An example is phlogiston theory in chemistry, which was once a scientific theory but was later disproven.
The key issue with creationist views is the refusal of proponents to acknowledge that their theory has been falsified. This is particularly evident in the formal requirements of the Institute for Creation Research, where scientists were required to base their conclusions on a particular interpretation of the Bible rather than empirical evidence from the physical universe. Creating a scientific understanding of the world requires open-mindedness, critical thinking, and a willingness to test hypotheses against empirical evidence. Hence, creationist views, while deeply held, should not be considered scientific in the conventional sense.
