Why Are Coronavirus Cases in India Rising Despite Lockdown Measures?
Since my travels and observations in India, it's evident that despite strict lockdown measures, coronavirus cases are still increasing every day. This phenomenon is not surprising, especially given the lockdown measures and the ongoing government and public behavior dynamics.
Travel Experiences and Observations
Recently, while traveling from Bangalore to Jaipur, I encountered situations that highlight some of the challenges in adhering to safety protocols. After undergoing security checks, I had to remove my mask twice in crowded areas to show my face but only once was needed, if at all. This made me question the necessity and efficiency of such protocols.
Furthermore, the quality of masks provided by different carriers shows a significant difference. I used Air India for my travel, where the masks were single-ply, whereas Indigo provided 3-ply masks, which are considered the standard. Even though the single-ply masks offered by Air India may be cheaper in procurement, the cost is the same to the exchequer when compared to 3-ply masks.
Public Behavior and Government Response during the Pandemic
The current pandemic situation is not as novel as it might seem. Just a few years ago, birds faced a similar challenge with the H5N1 virus, commonly known as Bird Flu. At that time, the government ordered the culling of birds. However, many did not comply, and the ban on egg sales did not stop the purchase and consumption of eggs. Similarly, during the current pandemic, people are not adhering to social distancing rules, not bothering to wear masks, and continuing to spit in public places, among other issues.
Even public transportation is not immune to these issues. Buses, despite being warned about overloading, continue to operate at full capacity, increasing the risk of mass infection. Bus owners are also accused of exploiting the situation and raising fares due to social distancing norms.
Government's Role in Containment and Public Health
Based on my father's account of the situation in his workplace, it is clear that the government is not effectively implementing containment measures. A person in his office tested positive for coronavirus, but instead of sanitizing the office as per standard operating procedures (SOPs), only a notice declaring the area a containment zone was placed. Despite this, the government did not take further action, and the office was not properly sanitized. The local municipal authorities are also not fulfilling their duties to dispose of waste from hospitals treating COVID patients.
Additionally, it is evident that some individuals prioritize their revenue over the health of others. My mother, who works in a private college, was required to come to the college due to a third lockdown, despite her willingness to continue teaching from home. Despite taking a risk by going to the college, she was not paid the full salary. Furthermore, when a teacher refused to do duty due to feeling sick, she was forced to do so, leading to a rapid spread of the virus in the college. This example highlights the lack of empathy and proper care for the well-being of others.
These challenges are only scratching the surface, and the worst may be yet to come. As more strict measures are implemented and the general public's behavior continues to be non-compliant, the situation in India is likely to get worse.
