When volcanoes erupt beneath the ocean, the interaction between lava and water creates unique and fascinating geological phenomena. Unlike volcanic eruptions on land, underwater eruptions present a very different scenario due to the denser nature of seawater and the continuous flow of new water.

Why Lava Immersed in Water Cooling is Unique

Volcanic eruptions beneath the ocean can drastically affect the surrounding environment. The lava cools much quicker in water than in air of the same temperature. This is because water is denser than air, making heat dissipation happen much faster. Therefore, the question of whether the lava evaporates the water or if it is still too hot to do so is a common misconception. The heat from the lava is what causes the water to boil and eventually turn to steam. Without this heat source, the water would not be able to evaporate.

Formation of Pillow Lava

The rapid cooling of lava underwater results in the formation of pillow lava. Pillow lava is characterized by fat, rounded shapes with distinctive ‘chilled’ margins. This unique texture and form help geologists identify ancient lava flows in rocks. The process begins when lava oozes out of the volcano and the outer edges of the lava cooling quickly form a skin that insists on further expansion. This leads to the formation of rounded shapes - the pillows.

Dynamic Water Interaction and Pillow Formation

When the water near the eruption is in motion, fresh, cold water continually arrives, heating up, boiling, and moving away. This constant movement is crucial in the formation and evolution of the pillow lava. As the lava continues to ooze, new lava further cools, creating a new layer, which in turn forms another pillow. This continuous process results in a stack of these pillows, each forming in rapid sequence.
