Coronavirus pandemic has led to a surge in the development and usage of various test kits to detect the virus. These tests play a crucial role in identifying infected individuals, containing the spread of the virus, and aiding in public health responses. This article will explore the components of a typical coronavirus test kit, the process involved, and recent innovations in the field.

Components of a Coronavirus Test Kit

Coronavirus test kits come in various forms, each designed to facilitate the detection process. Commonly, they include:

Test Kit: This often includes a test cassette, buffer solution, and a dropper, among other materials. Bottle with Support Arrangement: Usually, a bottle containing buffer solution provides the necessary liquid for the test. Extraction Tube/Cap: Used to collect the sample, often involving a nasal swab. Nasal Swab: The device used to collect nasal specimens.

Process Involved in Utilizing a Test Kit

To utilize a coronavirus test kit, the following steps are typically involved:

Buffer Addition: A buffer solution is added to the extraction tube. Sample Collection: The nasal sample is collected using the swab provided in the unit. Test Cassette Preparation: The dropper is used to draw a drop of blood serum or plasma into the marked place of the test cassette. Then, 2-3 drops of buffer solution are placed into the specified place. Result Interpretation: Lines C, M, and G appear on the Biozooo test cassette. The presence or absence of these lines indicates the status of the test result.

Innovations in Coronavirus Testing

One company, NG Biotech, based in Guipry-Messac, Ille-et-Vilaine, France, has introduced an ultra-rapid test for detecting COVID-19. This is the first rapid diagnostic test of its kind in France.

Key Features:

Ultra-Rapid Detection: The test yields results in just 15 minutes at most, similar to a pregnancy test. Cost-Effective: The test is significantly cheaper, costing less than €10. Serological Test: It detects antibodies in the blood, which the body generates if the virus is present.

How It Works: Unlike PCR tests, which are time-consuming and expensive, the NG Biotech test detects antibodies in the blood. This serological test is complementary to PCR tests, which also detect the virus.

Manufacturing Capabilities: NG Biotech plans to manufacture up to two million tests per month in the near future, which is a significant boost to the availability of testing kits.

Traditional PCR Tests

While PCR tests are highly reliable, they are relatively complex and time-consuming:

Reagent Extraction: Viral RNA is extracted and converted to DNA. DNA Labeling: A portion of the DNA is labeled. DNA Amplification: Multiple copies of the DNA are produced through the polymerase chain reaction.

Though these tests are automatable, they require a high level of expertise and specialized equipment, making them less accessible to the general public.
