An ovum is a haploid cell, similar to a sperm, each carrying half the genetic material necessary for human development. Cleavage

Gastrulation

During gastrulation, the blastocyst undergoes significant changes as it transforms into a three-layered structure, known as the gastrula. These layers will give rise to different tissues and organs in the future.

Organogenesis

The final stage is organogenesis, where various organs and structures begin to form from the three layers of the gastrula. This is a crucial period in fetal development, as it determines the formation of all bodily functions and structures.

As the embryo continues to develop, the single cell differentiates into various specialized cell types and structures. This process is driven by genetic information and environmental factors, ensuring the formation of a fully functional and complex human being.

A Theoretical Question: Starting Out as One or Two Cells

Some might wonder if humans start with one or two cells. Strictly speaking, we never "started out" at all. Humans are part of a germline, meaning our cellular lineage has been dividing and adapting for about 4 billion years. However, in a social context, it is necessary to define where the beginning of "us" was. This is most commonly defined as birth or the moment of separation from the mother's body.
