Wild Rabbits in Canada

Beyond the domesticated varieties, wild rabbits in Canada exhibit remarkable adaptability and diversity. Weighing only 2-3 pounds, they are well-adapted to living in close proximity to humans. Additionally, there are also wild populations of domestic rabbits, which are descendants of European rabbits that were initially introduced for pet and meat purposes. Evolution of Rabbits and Lagomorphs

A detailed look into the evolutionary history of rabbits and their relatives, the Lagomorphs (which include rabbits, hares, and pikas), reveals a fascinating journey through time. Lagomorphs are part of the family of mammals, characterized by their herbivorous diet and distinct teeth. The fossil record indicates that these animals have roots dating back to the Cretaceous period, around 85 million years ago. One of the earliest candidates in this lineage is named Alymlestes. By the Paleocene, around 65 million years ago, the first rabbits emerged with rabbit-like dentition, represented by the genus Mimotoma. The Eocene period, around 60 million years ago, saw the appearance of Mimolagus, showing even more rabbit-like characteristics. All these ancient Lagomorphs were primarily found in Asia. By the middle Oligocene, circa 37 million years ago, the first pika, Desmatolagus, appeared in Asia, and soon thereafter, pika representatives were found in Europe as well. By Miocene times, around 23 million years ago, the Lagomorphs had expanded their range to include North America, and soon after, they were also established in Africa. Today, the Genus Ochotona, the modern pika genus, is limited to Asia and North America.
