The Challenges of Remaining a Spiritual Person: Overcoming Mental and Emotional Distress

Our journey to becoming and remaining a spiritual person is fraught with challenges. We are often controlled by the senses of the body, the thoughts of the mind, and the anguish of the ego. Our lives are complex and full of constant challenges. This complexity makes it difficult to maintain a spiritual path, let alone stay on it. The task is not just to tame but to destroy the monkey mind, to let go of our ego, and to overcome our desires that take us to our grave.

Evolution and the Transition from Fish to Human

Let us consider why it took millions of years for fish to evolve into humans. A physical aspect is clearly at play here, but the journey from the consciousness of an atom to that of a Divine being is a mental and spiritual one. The fastest way to achieve this transition is to change our mind and emotions, not through external practices alone but through the purity and integrity of our thoughts, emotions, words, and actions.

The Distress of a Spiritual Person

One of the key challenges a spiritual person faces is when they can no longer find meaning, peace, comfort, strength, or connection in life. When an individual is diagnosed with a terminal illness, or is undergoing great physical or emotional pain, they naturally question their beliefs. Major life stressors affect us not only from a psychological, social, and physical standpoint but also spiritually. Even natural disasters, accidents, or illnesses can trigger spiritual struggles.

Challenges at the Core of Spiritual Growth

In my opinion, the hardest part of remaining a spiritual person is the mindset and emotions we carry. We must constantly be vigilant against the constant challenges and attacks from the mind and the ego. Here are some key challenges:

Overcoming the Mind: The mind is a powerful weapon and ally but also a formidable obstacle. Continuous practice of mindfulness and meditation can help to tame the monkey mind and bring clarity. Letting Go of the Ego: Our ego is a fierce protector, but it also keeps us stuck in the material world. Cleansing the ego through self-reflection and spiritual practices is crucial. Controlling Desires: Our desires often lead us to our graves. Cultivating contentment and detachment is essential in managing our internal desires.

Moreover, we can only achieve true purity by maintaining the purity and integrity of our thoughts, emotions, words, and actions. Any impurity, even within our consciousness, is like adding colored water to clear water. It can obscure our true essence and prevent us from experiencing our spiritual selves.

Ultimately, the journey to becoming and remaining a spiritual person is as individual as each of us. It requires continuous effort, awareness, and commitment. But the rewards are immense, as we find not only peace and contentment in our lives but also a profound connection to the essence of who we truly are.
