Reflections on the BITSAT Exam Experience

The BITSAT, Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test, was held on June 26th, 2024, attracting numerous candidates seeking admission to the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science campuses in India. This entrance exam evaluates candidates' proficiency in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English comprehension. Typically, results are announced within a few weeks of the exam.

My Experience with the BITSAT

I undertook the second shift of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test on June 6th, 2024, with high expectations. Having consistently scored around 250 in Embibe mock tests, I found the exam pattern to be quite unpredictable, with varying difficulty levels and cutoffs.

Chemistry

Chemistry was my strong suit, and I began with it, allocating the first 40 minutes to this subject. Among the questions, I faced a couple that were quite challenging—identifying amino acids that don't give a specific color reaction, as well as problems involving ortho and para spin isomers of hydrogen. Despite leaving a few questions unanswered due to the time constraints, I was confident with my performance in chemistry.

Likelihood and Reading Comprehension

The Logical Reasoning (LR) and English comprehension sections followed, which I found to be quite straightforward. Some questions, however, required deeper insights and were thought-provoking. I managed to complete this section within 40 minutes and left about 5-6 questions unanswered, allocating the remaining 15 minutes to further review my answers.

Physics

Proceeding to physics, a subject where my strengths are less pronounced, I found the questions to be easily solvable, mainly formula and concept-based. Despite not being strong in physics, I was able to complete the section in about 25-30 minutes, leaving ample time for the mathematics section.

Mathematics

The mathematics section was arguably the most challenging, with long but straightforward questions. I attempted around 20 questions in 40 minutes but left 4-5 easy questions due to the time constraints. While my foundational concepts in mathematics are clear, I often struggle with thought-provoking questions, leading to some errors.

Final Submission and Reflection

Having confused the order of attempting the questions, I ended up with a score of 204. My anticipation was much higher, aiming for 250 or more, and the disappointment was palpable. Reviewing the scores of my peers, my friend who scored 206, added to the tension and disappointment.

Conclusion and Future Efforts

The cutoffs may decrease significantly this year, given that the total marks have dropped from 450 to 390. Despite this, I recognize that I need to perform better. I will work diligently to improve my performance and aim for 250 in the August attempt. It's essential to focus on consistent preparation and managing time effectively during the exam.

I hope this reflection helps other students prepare for the BITSAT and similar entrance exams. Remember to give your best, and never underestimate the importance of thorough preparation and time management.
