My Journey with Parachuting: Reflections on AFF and My First Tandem Jump
My Journey with Parachuting: Reflections on AFF and My First Tandem Jump
Parachuting has been a thrilling and sometimes controversial part of my life. As I look back, I find myself reflecting on one of the most significant milestones in this sport: my first AFF (Accelerated Free Fall) jump. This experience was not just about the thrill of jumping out of an aircraft; it was also a defining moment that tested my courage and determination.
My Initial Parachuting Experience
My first 19 jumps were made in the early 1960s, a time when the sport was still in its nascent stages. These early jumps were nothing like what I might have experienced today. Instead of using modern equipment and advanced techniques, the jumps I made were more akin to simple daredevil stunts. I remember stepping out of a Noorduyn Norseman or a Cessna 172 aircraft without anyone to hold on to, as there was no inflight instruction or communication device. My jumps were completed using a 5.00 football helmet, cotton work coveralls, and tightly laced jump boots. The round canopies had cutout gores, and the only harness I had was a belly reserve with no barometric E-rig. All ground training culminated with a command to jump at altitude.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
These jumps were not without challenges. Error after error was committed, often resulting in a bouncy landing. Most of the time, I managed to land at 16-20 FPS, which often felt like being hit by a ton of bricks. While these jumps were successful in the sense that I didn't sustain any serious injuries, they were certainly not without their impact on my personal life. My then girlfriend, who later became my wife, was not impressed by these jumps and suggested that I consider giving up the sport.
My Last Parachute Jump
Finishing this incredible journey was the tandem jump I made after my wife passed away. This jump was out of a Twin Otter aircraft, guided by an experienced tandem master. The experience was markedly different from my early solo jumps. It was a lot more fun and provided me with the sense of security and support that I lacked in the past. This last jump symbolized a new chapter in my life, one where I could enjoy the thrill of jumping without the fear of letting my loved ones down.
Reflections and Future Plans
Reflecting on my journey with parachuting, I have come to the realization that while I may be too old to continue with aggressive training, I can still enjoy the sport as a passenger. As a jump pilot, I have had the privilege of observing countless AFF trainees, and their dedication to the sport has inspired me. However, with my advancing age and other obligations, I am probably reaching the end of my active participation. Nonetheless, my memories of parachuting remain a cherished part of my life, and I will always carry the thrill of that first jump with me.
In conclusion, my experience with parachuting, particularly my first AFF jump, was a significant moment in my life. It tested my courage, taught me valuable lessons, and provided me with a unique perspective. For those considering the sport, whether it is AFF or tandem jumping, I can say that it is an exhilarating and unforgettable experience. May future generations continue to enjoy and respect this incredible sport, and may they always carry a burning desire to push their limits.
