Is May Summer or Spring: Unraveling the Seasonal Mysteries of May

May, a month typically associated with the spring season, has been undergoing a clash of identities lately, particularly in regions with varying climates. Embracing a unique identity that sits somewhere between spring and summer, May can be a month of fluctuating temperatures and weather patterns, much to the surprise of those who might expect a consistent seasonal flow.

Traditionally, spring is considered to start around early March and extend through May. During April and the beginning of May, the weather is often cooler and more temperamental, with nights still retaining a chill and days bringing a hint of warmth. However, as we move through the latter part of May, the story changes. The temperatures soar, often surpassing what is usually expected for the earlier parts of summer.

Take this week as a prime example: on May 10th, which should still be comfortably spring-like, the mercury soared to temperatures more akin to a typical July day. Starting off with a mild 65 degrees Fahrenheit in the early morning, by mid-day, it had climbed to a sweltering 85 degrees. This heat wave is not just a one-day anomaly but is forecast to continue through Thursday and Friday, creating a nonstop nightmare of discomfort.

Western Astrological Signs and the Seasonal Calendar

From an astrological perspective, May is a critical point in the planetary journey. Western astrology, rooted in the zodiac signs, often aligns the start of astrological signs with cardinal points in the sun's apparent motion. These cardinal points occur on the 21st of March, June, September, and December, marking the start of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively.

However, the traditional system has been in place for over 3000 years and has not accounted for the precession of the equinoxes. This phenomenon has shifted the signs by one month, meaning that what was once associated with Capricorn is now linked to Sagittarius. Therefore, for those living in the Northern Hemisphere, the first part of May is officially still spring, but the latter part could be treated as fixed spring, almost stepping into early summer.

Picking Your Own Season

Ultimately, the labeling of May as either predominantly spring or summer is a matter of personal preference and regional climate. Astrology, despite its symbolic and mythological underpinnings, offers a fascinating way to delve into the significance of the month and align it with planetary movements. But these sign labels are not set in stone; they are more a matter of subjective interpretation and can vary widely based on individual beliefs and experiences.

There are other methods to define spring, such as the blooming of snowdrops or the timing of Easter. These traditional markers can also be used to define the season and offer a more grounded, tangible way to assess the changing seasons. However, modern astrological markers are still an interesting lens through which to view and understand the month.

Beyond the traditional labels, it's all about personal experience. For some, May remains unequivocally spring, while for others, it is a transitional phase stepping closer to summer. The key is to embrace the month for what it brings—whether it's the gentle warmth of spring or the sweeter promise of summer.
