Deep Sea Fishing with a Manta Ray
During a deep sea fishing trip off the coast of Oregon, one of our family members hooked a Manta ray. While it’s illegal to catch them, it’s almost impossible to know what you have until you pull the Manta ray to the surface. This particular Manta ray was a real beast, as large as the boat’s length. The captain quickly informed the local oceanographic museum, but unfortunately, the Manta ray suffocated due to being folded over on its side after being pulled aboard the boat. It serves as a reminder of the powerful and terrifying nature of such creatures, and how quickly things can turn dangerous in the deep sea.
Sailing Through the Jaws
During a Steller's sea lion encounter off the coast of Alaska in 2008, a male sea lion weighing up to 2500 lbs attempted to teach the author how to find and eat clams while free diving. Initially, the encounter left the author feeling scared and on edge. The sea lion’s large head would rise a few feet in front, crushing a clam with its blunt teeth and then diving and resurfacing – it was trying to teach the author! This experience highlights not only the impressive size of these creatures but also the unexpected teaching moments they can offer.
An Unforgettable Experience at Sea World
While visiting Sea World in Aurora, a close encounter occurred that nearly turned into a tragedy. The author, buzzed from alcohol, slipped and fell into the pool. Mamu, the Sea World mascot, immediately came to the author’s aid and lifted them out of the water. Fortunately, the audience thought it was part of the act, but it’s a day the author will never forget. This encounter underscores the unpredictable nature of marine life and the importance of maintaining a safe distance.
These experiences teach us about the incredible beauty and terrifying power of sea creatures. Whether you’re deep sea fishing, exploring Alaskan waters, or visiting marine parks, it's crucial to approach these marine environments with respect and caution. Understanding the behavior and habits of these creatures can help mitigate fears and ensure a safer, more enjoyable experience for all involved.
