Gravitational Waves and the Aether: Misconceptions and Truth in Modern Physics

Gravitational waves, discovered through the observations made by LIGO and other detectors, are ripples in spacetime caused by the acceleration of massive objects like merging black holes or neutron stars. They propagate through spacetime itself rather than through a medium like the aether. While gravitational waves do indicate that spacetime can be dynamic and can carry information about cosmic events, they do not constitute aether in the traditional sense.

The Concept of Aether and its Disprovement

The aether was once thought of as an invisible medium that filled all of space and was necessary for light to travel through. This idea has been thoroughly disproven and replaced by the concept of the spacetime continuum. Gravitational waves, on the other hand, are ripples in the spacetime continuum that are created by the acceleration of massive objects.

Confronting the Great Void: Humanity's Innate Need for Substance

The human need to fill the 'Great Void' in our understanding of the universe has led us to conjure various candidates to play a role in our reality narratives. One such candidate was the gravitational field, which exhibits wave-like characteristics similar to those of light. However, the illustrations often used to depict field waves are misleading, as they do not accurately represent the true nature of field perturbations. All fields, including gravitational fields, exhibit these wave-like characteristics only in terms of the rise and fall of force amplitude.

Einstein and the Mathematical Nature of Spacetime

According to Albert Einstein, spacetime is a mathematical construct with no material properties. In his letters to colleagues, he emphasized the importance of changing how scientists think and talk about spacetime. Einstein stated, Spacetime is a metric in physics, a metric is a numerical value derived from measurements, a number, a quantity to be used in math equations to make accurate predictions. Spacetime is a quantity used in the field equations of general relativity, not a material substance that can bend, curve, or warp. These bending, curving, and warping are simply figures of speech referring to the geometric mappings of gravitational fields and their effects on how objects move within those fields.

Resilience of Misconceptions

Even though the idea of aether has been discredited, the concept of the spacetime metric has been thoroughly reified in our imaginations. Some find it challenging to accept that the curved lines on weather maps or the longitudes and latitudes on globes are not physically real but mere representations. Similarly, when it comes to the spacetime metric, images of spacetime as a fabric are deeply ingrained in our understanding, making it difficult to view it purely as a mathematical construct. This resistance is partly due to the same dread of nothingness that abandoned the aether in the first place.
