String theory initially proposed the existence of 10 dimensions, combining 9 spatial dimensions and 1 time dimension. As the theory evolved, M-theory emerged as an extension, adding one more dimension, thus making the total 11 dimensions. M-theory not only unifies various string theories but also suggests that our universe could be a 3-dimensional slice of a much larger 11-dimensional space.

Mathematical Consistency

The intricate mathematics of string theory and M-theory require the existence of these extra dimensions. These dimensions are essential for the theories to remain mathematically consistent and to avoid the occurrence of anomalies that would invalidate the model.
